Athens the capital of Greece and known as one of the worlds largest cities. Athens’s is rich in culture being known as a center for the arts, learning and philosophy. The names origin derive from the Greek word Akro which translates to high, extremity or edge and Polis meaning city. So essentially Acropolis means “High city”, “City of the
Edge” or even “City in the Air”.
The structures of the Acropolis were originally built and positioned for defensive purposes. It was until the 5th century B.C. that the Parthenon, the Erechtheion, the Propylaea, and the temple of Athena Nike were constructed. In the 6th century Christians converted the Acropolis’ temples into churches. The Parthenon was dedicated to the Virgin Mary and the Erechtheion became a chapel.
