 Hike from Arbel to Magdala

“And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their Synagogues…” (Matthew 4:23) – Surely one of the synagogues where Jesus preached was the Synagogue of Arbel, where we start the hike. Arbel, a Jewish town between Nazareth and Capernaum, is mentioned already in the Old Testament1, but was better known in the New Testament Era for its strict attachment to the Jewish Tradition2 and its rebellious character3 due to its belief in the redemption4. This synagogue shows us the development of the Jewish faith, from Jesus’ time and until the early Arab period5-6. From here we start our hike towards Magdala. A steep path takes us along some ancient “Box Tombs”7, dedicated by some Jews to Seth son of Adam and Dina, daughter of Jacob. The path ends in Wadi Hammam, the Valley of the Doves. Here we have to fight our way through the bushes and stones, knowing that Jesus had to do the same in order to avoid the Roman Soldiers8 and Tax Collectors9. After a short break by the modern Bedouin Village Wadi Hammam we continue through the Flourishing orchards of the Ginossar Valley known for their fruits already in Jesus’ time10-11 and on to the recent excavations of Ancient Magdala12, where we still can see the very Synagogue where Jesus preached, the Fish Market, some Jewish Purification Baths and much more…

Length of Hike: Approx. 7 Km. Due to the steep descent from Arbel and the dense vegetation of Wadi Hammam / Nachal Arbel hikers should be in reasonable shape/physical condition.
